Hello, subscribers!
Thank you for following to stay informed about my writing projects. Whether you’ve been hanging out for the past few years while I clamored my way through learning how to write, submit, and improve my work, or if you’ve recently followed to make sure you don’t miss out on The Shipwreck of the Cerberus, thank you for being here.
(Pardon me being a little long-winded in musing about gratitude below. You can skip to the bottom for the pre-ordering instructions.)
It’s a delight when people respond to my writing, and that’s enough. You’re enough. I don’t need the whole world’s attention, and the sense that this is a mutual endeavor informs my thinking about gratitude and creativity. I think all people deep down are creative, need to be creative; we need it to really live. Expressive communication through the arts is how we show our best and most true selves. Sometimes it’s how we find our true selves.
When those selves recognize each other, it’s a bit like magic. That’s the thrill in having your work appreciated.
It’s also the risk that makes us hold back.
Work that tells the truth is vulnerable. If you write what you’re afraid to write, you’re tapping into things that are uncomfortable, unsettling, illegal, gross, embarrassing, cringe-worthy, shameful, and downright silly. That’s why Joe Lansdale gives horror writers the advice: “Write like everyone you know is dead.”
They’re not, though, and eventually the time comes to share your writing. It’s a big leap. It requires trusting readers, trusting you.
So here’s an uncomfortable, gross, embarrassing, and downright silly chapbook so tiny you can fit it in your pocket. The Shipwreck of the Cerberus is at the printers and shipping soon. The word count is about ten-thousand words, and it’s limited to 200 copies. I’ll sign each one.
Description: This cursed chapbook was not meant to be. Limited edition novelette by Joe Koch concerning the brazen head of Captain Jim Standard and the thief who absconds with him into the afterlife. Body horror, surrealism, absurd humor, necrophilia, and existential despair. Available exclusively from the author in this limited, signed edition of 200.
You can pre-order it right now before the fancy-schmancy official link goes live in a week or so.
Here’s how:
Pay me through Venmo: @horrorsong
IMPORTANT: Include a note with payment with your FULL NAME and SHIPPING ADDRESS.
(I’ll need your address to send the book, obviously, and if Venmo is under your deadname, I’d like to avoid using that on the package.)
Cost (including shipping) in the US is $16.00
Outside the US (including shipping) is $30.00
(Apologies for the high shipping cost; I’ve tried to figure out an average for the sake of simplicity in taking and fulfilling orders)
Alternate payment method (please remember to include a note with your name and shipping address as this is not a business account): https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/horrorsong
I’m excited and nervous to get this cursed book into your hands.
Thank you for reading! If you enjoy my writing, please follow. I only post when I have new work to share and news of upcoming releases or events.
Hi Joe, is there any alternative to using Venmo? Sadly, the service is unavailable here in Germany.

Hi Joe,
Is it possible to pay you with PayPal? Venmo hates me and refuses to work.
Thanks, Jen
