Swag! And a Beloved Fungus

Cosmic Horror Monthly is running an early bird bundle with all sorts of cool book swag for another week or so, and then they’ll be opening pre-sales for the book alone: “Aseptic and Faintly Sadistic” is an anthology of hysteria fiction. Proceeds go to the Chicago Abortion Fund.

Another new story just came out in “A Compendium of Creeps” from Cemetery Gates. It’s a book for fans of folk horror and world folklore, bringing together nonfiction accounts of the creepiest locations around the world, contemporary essays on folklore, and original horror fiction inspired by urban legends and creepypasta.

My contribution is a very private urban legend entitled ONCE YOU SEE IT, and it’s based on a true story from the modern deep south.

Without getting too far ahead of things, I’d like to share that I’ve been invited to some amazing and inspiring anthology projects lately, and I’m talking with publishers about a new collection, AND plotting to self-publish (with the help of friends) a special limited edition signed novelette. I’m very excited to share the new work, so trust me, I’ll shout when everything is finalized.

This seems like a good moment to mention how important writing friends have been and continue to be to my small measure of success as an author. I’ve never been an extrovert who does “networking” – the word makes me cringe – but diligently working on my craft and finding like-minded creative folks has built an organic support network over time. The whole thing just grew on its own, like a beloved fungus.

Remember, this didn’t happen overnight. If you’re struggling in the dark as a writer, I know exactly what that’s like because I did it for several years and nearly threw my novella THE WINGSPAN OF SEVERED HANDS in the trash. My advice is to be aware of the resources that people offer, no matter how small, to offer what you can in return, and don’t take your talents or the kindness of others for granted.

Read lots of books, but also read for colleagues and engage in feedback. Share opportunities rather than hoarding them. Only a tiny number of writers will have Stephen King-level success, so approach this job as a community effort. Be good to each other, my beloved fungi.

Thank you for reading! If you enjoy my work, please follow this blog for updates. Consider supporting my continued creativity and existence by picking up a copy of CONVULSIVE or THE WINGSPAN OF SEVERED HANDS for yourself, a friend, an evil nemesis, or a local free library.
